MEMORABLE PASSAGE

“PiggyㅡPiggyㅡ”
“It’s come!” gasped Piggy, “It’s real!”

He clung to Ralph and reached to get his breath
“Piggy, come outside. I want you, Piggy.”
Ralph’s mouth was against Piggy’s ear.
“Don’t say anything.”
“PiggyㅡWhere are you, Piggy?”

This is my favorite passage from the novel. This is meaningful to me because I actually said something similar like this to a new kid when I went camping with half of my entire grade as a school field trip. This passage reminds me of my middle school field trips. By reading this passage you can see that Ralph cares for Piggy because he is telling Piggy not to say a word. When they thought it was the beast that came to eat Piggy.

THEME

The theme for the novel The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding is that kids needs their parents care as long as they are teenagers. Without adults in our world we would turn into savages instead of being civilized. This novel is a perfect example because the kids in the island were out of control, killing, and fighting each other. They were fighting about who’s going to become the leader of the survivors on the island. This is the reason why we have rules in our modern day society, because we don’t go running around killing, and fighting with each other to choose who is going to be the chief.
Also it is extremely important to a teenager living in 2008 because the book is about teenagers like us and it is written about their behaviors when they are on the island. The theme is like if you are a civilized person or an uncivilized person. It’s about teenagers struggling with rules throughout their teenage life. So I think this theme is related to me because even I sometimes wish that there were no rules like the SAVE policy. Sometimes this kid really annoys me but it’s like he/she is like guarded with this SAVE policy, so thank God that he made rules. By good education and surroundings, we will be raised and civilized. Without training and education we will be lead into a savagery.

Now, what does this theme have to do with a teenager living in 2008? I say probably not because we won’t go killing each other around on an island, would we?

MOOD

The overall atmosphere of the book, The Lord of the Flies, was dark, serious, and violent. The kids/survivors are like totally out of their minds. I can understand killing pigs for food but killing a person like Piggy totally freaked me out. By reading the novel you can actually feel the thoughts of how evil one of the main characters Jack is. But I saw how strong the kids were to survive through the island on themselves without adults.

No, the mood doesn’t sadden me. At some chapters of the novel it made me wonder what might happen next because it was so creepy and disgusting and so on. I freaked out when they left a pig’s head for the beast. But the part when they killed my favorite character Piggy it saddens me because Piggy was such a bright, intelligent, and nice kid. The book really made me wonder how old these kids are because they went hunting a pig meaning they might be in high school. If they are high school kids, killing another human being is not a smart choice to make.

CLIMAX

The climax of this book, The Lord of the Flies, is the scene when one of the main characters of this book, Piggy dies. Piggy is killed by Jack who was one of the hunters, who used to follow Ralph. The kids on the island were not even older than the age of 15. This event made me think that the world is an untrustworthy place, I could of never thought about teenagers killing each other on an island just because they don't like them. I feel sorry for Jack who killed Piggy because he must have lost his human senses.

CHARACTERS

Ralph
Ralph is the main character of this novel. He is the protagonist; he represents leadership and order. He is the chief of the civilized tribe who believed in that they would get rescued if they kept a big fire going. He has a father who works for the Navy. He has some conflicts with others because he only gives order to them. In my personal opinion he’s not a favorable character in books because he is so well-rounded he knows what he’s doing and thinks what will happen after taking action. Ralph is also incredibly active and he volunteers to go on dangerous adventures in the island. Ralph tries to reveal about the universal human experience is to be a leader that cares for his people and not giving up on a certain promise.

Piggy (Johnny)
Piggy is the character that was with Ralph from the beginning of the story until he died. He never left Ralph and chose Jack as his leader/chief. Piggy was the smart one that always uses his knowledge before he speaks up to the tribe. He was teased a lot but didn’t care about it a lot. Piggy is the kind of characters that we need in the universe to make it a better place. Piggy has an auntie, his parents died when he was young. In the novel Piggy is a very unfavorable character because he acts like he’s the only smart one and that uses his brain. But it’s true. My favorite character is Piggy because he thinks before he speaks, I don't like people who just say anything they want to and not thinking about what might happen after they say it. Piggy tries not to make enemies even though people tease him by his nickname. He just doesn’t say anything mean that would hurt their feelings. What Piggy tries to reveal about the universal human experience is not to give up on someone just because other people are following the other person. Keep on believing in the person who you think would be a great leader even though he/she has nothing with him/her at the moment.

Jack
Jack is the leader of the choir. He is an antagonist; he represents savagery and a dictator. He was picked as a leader from the choir because he could sing the highest pitch from the choir. At the first half of the book Jack was really cooperative with Ralph and they were like best friends. But as you flip the pages Jack turns into a savage who only wants power and respects from others. Jack is a favorable character in the novel because he goes hunting with his hunters (choir) and keeps the food on the table for the people who follow him. Personally I don't like Jack because he only thinks for himself. He only acts as if he is a good leader because he wants to buy the tribes respect. Jack tires to reveal about the universal human experience is that there are some leaders that shows the citizens of that country that he/she would be a perfect president for them if they vote for him/her.

Simon
Simon is a favorable character in the book he is the one who thinks about the benefit of not only him but the tribe. Simon is an okay character in the novel because he's at least not doing things for his own benefit. What Simon tries to reveal some universal human experience is that it’s important to be a person who will benefit not only him but even the others.

Roger
Roger is in the choir. In the savagery tribe he's extremely not only brutal but also a bloodlust. He even hits his own people in his tribe because they didn't listen to him. It’s like showing no respect to his own people. So I think, he is not a favorable character in the novel

Littluns
Littluns are like citizens of the society

Bigguns
Bigguns are upper class citizens

INTRODUCTION/FREE WRITING

Have you ever heard about the book, The Lord of the Flies, by William Golding? This is my first novel for my English class. I strongly recommend this book to teenagers who need to know why the civilization is important for them to live as a good member of a human being in our society. The book is about kids getting trapped on an island, and how they struggle to survive on the island until they get rescued. The book is too obvious you can predict what would happen next. In the book, the people who wants to get rescued is not more than half of the survivor on the island. It might be because they are only teenagers who want to enjoy their freedom away from the adults. They disagreed, didn’t respect each other’s opinions and just insist their own words. By getting a deeper and deeper conflict, it leads to murder and savagery. Through the conflicts between the civilized and uncivilized people, human beings find the right way of living to survive in the world and then find the true meaning of cooperation. William Golding, I think, represented some characters as important ideas or themes. Each of the main characters Ralph, Piggy, Simon, Jack, and Roger represents ideas or themes in this novel. On the streets you can see good vs. evil. Personally I think the author really points a moral by a good explanation about good vs. evil through his novel.
